Ariadne's Thread

March 2026

Ariadne’s Thread is a monthly update of events, briefings and research for social change and human rights funders.

Ariadne news and events

Dear Ariadne Community,

As spring slowly approaches, I hope you’re feeling re-energized by the longer, warmer days ahead.

In addition to the weather, I find myself feeling optimistic about the shifts I’m witnessing in conversations with European funders, shifting from a focus on “who will fill the gaps” to a more expansive, joint exploration of what resourcing the field means at this moment.

In February, Ariadne held a strategic workshop for UK funders, “From Mapping to Movement: Aligning UK Philanthropy for Democratic Resilience.” This event provided valuable insights into how civil society and funders are responding to the rise of authoritarian populism and far-right ideas. What’s particularly heartening is the recognition of the importance of the solidarity infrastructure, the value of building trust among funders as a foundation for cross-sector collaboration, and the collective approach to risk. These shifts signal a welcome change in the way funders see their role and responsibility to meet the challenges of the moment.

In Ariadne, we are working towards launching the second cohort of the Susan Treadwell Change Lab – a transformative space designed to equip funders with the frameworks, relationships, and practical tools needed to drive meaningful, system-level change. The first cohort demonstrated the importance of philanthropic spaces where we are encouraged to challenge each other, allowed to disagree and take risks, make mistakes, and build trust within our community. For those of you who will join us in Bologna in April, for our 2026 Reconnect (which is now sold out!), I encourage you to join the session led by the Lab and find out for yourself why we are working hard to launch the second cohort. Also, if you’re inspired by the work of the Lab and would like to explore supporting it, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

I hope this month’s thread will be a source of inspiration and energy, as well as a testament to the great work happening within the Ariadne community.

In solidarity,

Renata Ćuk
