Advancing Human Rights: 2020 Key Findings

Every year, Human Rights Funders Network’s Advancing Human Rights research provides insights into the evolving landscape of human rights philanthropy. But 2020 was no ordinary year.

The latest report looks back at a world in flux: a global pandemic, widespread mobilization for racial justice, and resistance to rising authoritarianism had ignited a firestorm of change. Communities grappled with unprecedented challenges, and movements rose up demanding a more equitable world. The analysis of 2020 grants data answers the question: How did human rights funders respond?

We see a record-breaking $4.9 billion in human rights funding, a 21% increase over the previous year. While this growth is significant, the picture is complex. Our report highlights both promising trends—such as increased grantmaking from Global South and East funders—and persistent challenges, including ongoing global funding disparities, limited support for intersectional work, and low levels of flexible funding.

The lessons of 2020 offer a critical snapshot of philanthropy in action during a time of crisis. They also illuminate the path forward as we confront intersecting crises like climate change, rising authoritarianism, and racial, economic, and gender inequalities.
