#PhilanthropyForClimate: Commit to meaningful climate action today
July 20, 2021 Hannah Stevens

The International Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change is a global call to all foundations regardless of their mission, status or geographic location to come together and signal their commitment to climate action.

We only have 10 years left to act – there is no time to lose.

Philanthropy needs to act… now!

The growing climate emergency presents a serious risk to the pursuit of philanthropic aims everywhere and in every field. Moreover, there is a special responsibility on philanthropic organisations, which hold assets for the common good, to use their resources, independence and influence to rise to the challenge now. If we don’t act now, how can we be sure that we can act tomorrow?

The philanthropy sector has a unique, catalytic role and can help to bring about the necessary changes to ensure that everyone has equitable access to opportunities arising from the transition to a low carbon economy, and to ensure that the costs are not disproportionately borne by those who are least able to pay.

Where to start? The International Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change

The International Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change is a global call to all foundations regardless of their mission, status or geographic location to come together and signal their commitment to climate action. We believe that all foundations and philanthropic organisations can, and should, play a role in addressing the climate emergency and have an immense potential for positive climate impact when integrating climate consideration into their own operations and programmes, in the investment of their endowment, and speaking out on the climate emergency publicly. This Commitment is an ambitious and inclusive way of making this a reality.

WINGS, working closely with many other philanthropy support organisations and networks from around the world, will support and encourage foundations on this journey. By signing the International Commitment, you are joining a movement of almost 250 foundations in France, Spain and the UK who have signed national philanthropy commitments which run in parallel. National Commitments are currently still being set up in different countries across the world.
